A Word From
the Director

Laura Silverstein, MSN, RN, WCC, CDP, is True Care’s Director of Patient Services and oversees the PCA Certification Program. She loves home care because Caregivers build deep, long-term relationships with their clients, in contrast to hospital workers who are constantly coming and going. She has 17+ years experience working in various home care settings over the past 10 years but has a special place in her heart for True Care.

“We focus a lot on the initial matchmaking between Caregiver and patient. First and foremost, we look for individuals who are passionate about caring for others. Patients have so much to share and they want a Caregiver who’s interested in who they are beyond their health condition.”

Common Questions

What is a Personal Care Assistant (PCA)?
A Personal Care Assistant (PCA) is a certified Caregiver who helps people with disabilities and older adults accomplish daily tasks from home. As a PCA, you will play an important role in your clients’ lives, giving them the care they need to live independently in their own homes. PCAs have a flexible and rewarding career that offers growth opportunities in home care.
The program certifies new PCAs without caregiving experience and people with a caregiving background who want to add to their credentials.
  • For those with caregiving experience: Caregiving certification is awarded after a one-time, four-hour in-person training session.
  • For those without caregiving experience: A 40-hour in-person training program certifies individuals without a caregiving background.
The free PCA Certification course is offered at True Care sites in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Westchester County. The course is held in person under NYS regulations.
Yes, you can still participate as a New York Medicaid Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP) Caregiver. Training meets NYS’s new training requirements for Caregivers under CDPAP Medicaid, which allows clients to choose family members or friends as their Caregivers. Current CDPAP Caregivers will be awarded certification after a one-time, 4-hour training offered in person.
You are not required to have a caregiving background to participate in the program. This program is ideal for people who do not have caregiving experience but want to transition into this high-demand field. A 40-hour in-person training program certifies individuals without a caregiving history.
